Academic and non-academic staff of higher institutions in Nasarawa State, under the Joint Unions of Nasarawa State Tertiary Institutions (JUNSTI), have announced plans to begin an indefinite strike. The strike, which follows failed negotiations with the state government, is in protest of the non-implementation of the N30,000 minimum wage consequential adjustment.
JUNSTI is also calling for the immediate payment of promotion arrears and the full implementation of the newly agreed N70,500 minimum wage. Affected institutions include Isa Mustapha Agwai Polytechnic in Lafia, the College of Agriculture, Science and Technology, Lafia, and the College of Education, Akwanga.

A statement from the union, signed by chairman Samson Kale-Gbande and secretary Paul Olotu, revealed that the state government has yet to implement the wage increments announced earlier. The union announced that, after an emergency meeting on February 4, they have resolved to begin a two-week warning strike from midnight on Sunday, February 9, until Thursday, February 27, 2025.
The strike is a result of the government’s failure to address the union’s demands, as outlined in their ultimatum letter dated January 15, 2025. The union has expressed frustration over the delayed response to critical issues affecting the institutions.
