Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has revealed plans to establish ranching facilities in the state aimed at improving meat processing. The announcement came during a meeting with Timothee Witkowski, Head of International Projects at SEMMARIS, and Sonia Darraco, Regional Agriculture Counsellor of the French Embassy, who paid a courtesy visit to the governor in Abeokuta on Monday.
The proposed ranches, according to Governor Abiodun, will allow the state to rear, fatten, slaughter, and process meat under hygienic conditions that meet food safety standards. Currently, around 9,000 to 10,000 cattle are slaughtered daily at the Kara Cattle Market to supply Lagos, but the process lacks adequate hygiene, posing health risks.

Governor Abiodun praised SEMMARIS for its positive impact on agriculture, food distribution, and logistics, highlighting the success of the Rungis Farmers’ Market in France. He expressed confidence that the partnership with SEMMARIS would be a game changer, benefiting Ogun State and the southwest region by creating new agricultural opportunities.
The governor also pointed out Ogun’s strategic advantages, including its extensive road networks, abundant arable land, and rich mineral resources. He assured full support for SEMMARIS in setting up its operations, adding that the partnership would enhance agricultural practices in the state, particularly by providing vital extension services to local farmers.
In his remarks, Witkowski said his mission in the state is to be a strategic partner by working as a team to modernize agricultural projects as well as provide technical services in the state.
