Akinwumi Adesina Denies Desire to Contest in Nigeria's 2027 Presidential Election

The President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Akinwunmi Adesina, has dismissed reports suggesting he plans to contest for Nigeria’s presidency in 2027. The claims stemmed from an interview where Adesina was purported to have hinted at a future presidential run.

In a clarification posted on his X handle on Friday, Adesina rejected the reports, stating that his comments had been misinterpreted and misrepresented by several Nigerian media outlets. He firmly denied any intention to run for president.

This is not the first time Adesina has distanced himself from presidential ambitions. Prior to the 2023 elections, he released a statement explicitly ruling himself out of the race. Adesina, who served as Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture under President Goodluck Jonathan, was elected AfDB president in 2015 and re-elected in 2020.

Adesina’s tenure at the AfDB is set to end in May 2025, but he has consistently refuted speculation regarding his political aspirations.
