President Bola Tinubu has commended former military president Ibrahim Babangida for publicly acknowledging that MKO Abiola won the June 12, 1993, presidential election. Speaking in Abuja on Thursday at the launch of Babangida’s autobiography and a fundraising event for his presidential library, President Tinubu said the admission helps to set historical records straight.
In his memoir, Babangida revealed that he was in Katsina when the annulment was announced by the press secretary of his deputy without his prior knowledge or approval. He further disclosed that Sani Abacha, then Chief of Defence Staff, led the forces that overturned the election results, eventually seizing power in 1993.

Addressing the audience, Babangida described the annulment as an “accident of history” and expressed deep regret over the decision. He stated that, as the leader at the time, he takes full responsibility for the events that unfolded under his watch.
President Tinubu, reflecting on Babangida’s legacy, credited the former leader for inspiring his political journey. He also highlighted Babangida’s contributions to governance and national development during his tenure from 1985 to 1993.
