Roberta Flack, Grammy-winning singer, dies at 88

Roberta Flack, the celebrated singer and pianist known for her soulful ballads, has died at the age of 88.  

A statement from her publicist confirmed that she passed away on the morning of 24 February 2025, surrounded by family. The cause of death was not disclosed, though she had been battling Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, ALS, since 2022.  

Flack rose to prominence in the 1970s with hits such as ‘Killing Me Softly with His Song’ and ‘The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’, earning critical acclaim for her intimate vocal style.

A prodigy, she graduated from Howard University at 19 and initially worked as a music teacher in Washington, D.C. She later performed in clubs before shifting to pop under the guidance of her mentor, Frederick Wilkerson. By 1968, she had secured a residency at a Capitol Hill restaurant, paving the way for a remarkable career.
