Nigeria’s Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, has expressed concern over the security impact of the withdrawal of the Alliance of Sahel States from ECOWAS. He noted that Chad’s planned departure from the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) would further weaken the ability of the regional security force to conduct coordinated operations.
Speaking at a review meeting with Field Commanders in Abuja, Air Marshal Abubakar highlighted the evolving tactics of terrorist groups, citing their use of drones carrying locally fabricated grenades in a kamikaze-style attack on troops in Damboa last year. He warned that this development signals an increased effort by insurgents to expand drone warfare capabilities.

The Air Chief stressed the urgent need for a comprehensive and integrated Counter-Unmanned Aerial Vehicle system to protect troops and air assets. He emphasised that such measures were critical to maintaining operational effectiveness and countering the growing drone threat in conflict zones.
Meanwhile, ECOWAS has officially recognised the exit of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger Republic following the expiration of their one-year notice period on 29 January 2025. However, in a bid to maintain regional ties, the regional body has urged its member states to continue recognising national passports from the three departing countries that still bear the ECOWAS logo until further notice.
