Kenyan and Ethiopian Runners Dominate ECOWAS Abuja International Marathon

The streets of Abuja pulsed with energy over the weekend as thousands of athletes took part in the 2025 ECOWAS Abuja International Marathon. More than 4,000 runners lined up for the prestigious event, with elite competitors vying for top honours in the gruelling 21-kilometre half-marathon.  

Kenya’s Harrison Muchira Wanjiru stormed to victory, completing the course in 1 hour, 4 minutes, and 39 seconds to claim the $10,000 top prize. Compatriot Adam Sulaiman Muhamad finished second in 1 hour, 5 minutes, and 27 seconds, while Nigeria’s Francis James Musa secured third just 24 seconds behind him.

The women’s race saw Ethiopia’s Lydia Natiyaka Wamalawa take gold in 1:15:30, followed by Aberash Minsewo. Nigeria’s Patience Dalyop finished third.  

A separate 5 kilometer race, aimed at promoting mass participation, saw strong performances from Nigerian runners, who claimed the bulk of prizes reserved for ECOWAS citizens. The event drew an estimated 5,000 participants, competing for a $71,000 prize pool.
