Women’s Rights Advocates Demand Equity and Accountability in Nigerian Senate

A coalition of women’s rights advocates has expressed deep concern over allegations of gender bias, intimidation, and sexual harassment in the Nigerian Senate. The group, Voices for Inclusion and Equity for Women (VIEW), is calling for a transparent and independent investigation into the allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, following complaints by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. They stress that dismissing or downplaying these concerns only reinforces a culture of impunity and systemic marginalisation of female lawmakers.

The advocates demand that the Senate take immediate action to protect the rights and dignity of all lawmakers, particularly women, who remain underrepresented in the chamber. They insist that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan must receive a fair hearing and that the Ethics Committee should conduct an impartial probe into the claims. They also criticise recent attempts by some senators and aides to trivialise or invalidate concerns about abuse of power.

Beyond the specific allegations, the group is calling for comprehensive reforms to the Senate’s structure and rules, particularly those that allow unchecked authority. They argue that existing legislative frameworks must be revised to promote equity and inclusivity, ensuring that women in the Senate are not only heard but also fully empowered to participate in decision-making.

The statement, signed by notable activists including Aisha Muhammed-Oyebode, Saudatu Mahdi, and Maryam Uwais, warns that failure to act decisively will erode public trust in the legislature.
