The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has announced the reopening of the Onitsha Drug Market and other nearby markets after nearly a month-long closure. The decision follows a meeting between NAFDAC officials, the Anambra State government, and market union leaders. Business operations are set to resume on Friday.
Several markets, including those dealing in plumbing materials, timber, surgical supplies, and laboratory materials, were affected by last month’s shutdown as part of NAFDAC’s crackdown on illicit drugs. While the reopening has been approved, about 4,000 shops will remain closed until their owners clarify the presence of certain drugs found inside.

Speaking on the development, NAFDAC’s South-East Zonal Director, Martins Iluyomade, stressed that the agency remains committed to eliminating illegal drug sales. He urged traders to comply with regulations to avoid further sanctions.
Market union leaders welcomed the reopening and pledged to support NAFDAC’s efforts in identifying those engaged in the sale of illicit drugs.
