Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has urged incumbent Senate President Godswill Akpabio, to “face reality and do what is right” amid growing calls for him to step aside pending the outcome of a petition brought against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
Senator Saraki’s remarks follow Senator Akpabio’s claim that unnamed individuals are pressuring him to step down from his role as Nigeria’s Senate President. The statement was made during a meeting with Niger Delta youth leaders in Abuja.

Both Senator Saraki and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar have criticised Senate President Akpabio’s leadership over the suspension of Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. The senator was handed a six-month suspension after being faulted for violating Senate rules by the ethics committee, a decision that has drawn widespread condemnation.
The rights group SERAP has described the suspension as “unlawful” and an attack on freedom of expression, urging Akpabio to reverse the decision. Critics argue the move undermines democratic principles and sets a troubling precedent for parliamentary accountability in Nigeria.
