Abacha Family Rejects Babangida’s Claims on June 12 Annulment
File: Nigeria’s late military ruler, General Sani Abacha and former Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida

The family of Nigeria’s late military ruler, General Sani Abacha, has dismissed claims made by former Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida, regarding the annulment of the 1993 presidential election.

In his recently published memoir, ‘A Journey in Service’, General Babangida suggested that General Abacha, who was then Chief of Defence Staff, played a decisive role in the controversial decision to nullify the vote.

However, in a statement issued on Sunday, General Abacha’s son, Mohammed, accused the former leader of distorting historical facts. The family warned against what it described as ‘revisionist narratives’ designed to shift responsibility from those directly involved in the annulment.

They insisted that General Abacha had remained loyal to General Babangida throughout his career, even at times when the latter’s life was under threat.
