FG Approves Nearly $100m for Electric Vehicle Rollout in North-East

The Federal Government has approved contracts worth nearly $100 million (N151.9 billion) to introduce electric vehicle transportation in North-East Nigeria. Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga announced that the contracts, approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC), aim to promote energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions in the region.

The contracts include N2.9 billion awarded to Bluecrest Integrated Concept Limited for ten 17-seater electric buses, while Mutual Commitment Company Limited will supply 4,000 e-tricycles for N49.6 billion. Shanghai Integrated Infrastructure Development and Sinoma Investment International Limited will provide an additional 6,000 e-tricycles for N37.2 billion and N16.3 billion, respectively.

Messrs. HNCEGC will supply 100 BYD Dolphin EVs, 100 BYD Qin Plus EVs, and 37 BYD Yuan Plus EVs for N16.3 billion. Meanwhile, KB Laman Motors Nigeria Limited will establish charging points for N8.4 billion to support the new EV fleet.

The North East Development Commission will fund the project, which aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s plan to promote clean energy. The President had earlier approved the procurement of the vehicles and inspected samples in October last year.
