Senate Calls for Security Reinforcement in Benue After Deadly Attacks

The Senate has urged security agencies to restore peace in Garuwa, a community in Gwer Local Government Area of Benue State, following attacks that claimed four lives. The violence, which occurred on Monday, sparked protests by angry youths who set fire to the local government secretariat, the traditional ruler’s palace, and the homes of prominent individuals.

Raising a motion at Wednesday’s plenary, Senator Titus Zam condemned the killings and destruction, alleging the attackers were disguised as herders. Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro criticised the Benue State government’s response, warning that the lack of action was fueling public anger.

In its resolutions, the Senate directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to provide relief materials for displaced residents. It also mandated its committee on national security to assess the crisis, particularly its impact on agriculture and food production.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio reaffirmed the chamber’s commitment to ensuring peace in Benue, urging both federal and state authorities to act swiftly to end the violence.
