The President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, citing the prolonged political crisis that has destabilised governance.

In a nationwide address on Tuesday, the President announced the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and all members of the state’s House of Assembly for six months. The move, he said, was necessary to restore order amid escalating tensions.

He also appointed Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (Rtd) as Administrator to take charge of the affairs of the state.

Under Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution, a state of emergency permits the federal government to override normal constitutional processes in response to threats to national stability. It grants the President sweeping powers to impose regulations aimed at maintaining public order and security.

The crisis in Rivers State has deepened in recent months, with political rivalries sparking unrest. Tinubu’s intervention marks a significant escalation, as the federal government moves to assert control over the troubled state.
