The Abuja World Trade Center (WTC) has revealed that Nigeria accounts for 70 percent of global yam production, yet only 11 percent of the produce is exported. David Oke, head of trade services at the center, made this known on Tuesday at the sixth edition of LinkedIn Local Abuja, themed ‘Multidimensional Intelligence for Career Prosperity’.
Oke urged young entrepreneurs to explore the country’s yam export potential and emphasised the importance of research in building sustainable wealth. He highlighted the growing influence of the Nigerian diaspora, particularly in Australia and London, which has driven international demand for Nigerian food and fashion. He added that Africa is poised to become a global trade hub, and Nigeria must harness its human capital by involving youths in international trade.

He further noted that government initiatives such as the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme (ETLS) and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) protocols provide opportunities for young people to expand their businesses into international markets.
Also speaking at the event, Elsie Nemieboka, a human resources specialist and psychologist, stressed the importance of mental toughness in the workplace. She described resilience as key to navigating organisational politics and staying focused on career goals, even in the face of challenges.
