Jigawa Governor Rejects Calls for Self-Defence Amid Rising Insecurity

Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State has cautioned against calls for self-defence, warning that such a move could plunge Nigeria into anarchy. Speaking on a TV interview monitored by Radio Now’s Newsdesk, Governor Namadi responded to recent comments by retired General Theophilus Danjuma, who  urged Nigerians to take matters into their own hands in light of rising insecurity, particularly in Benue and Plateau States.

Governor Namadi acknowledged Danjuma’s stature but disagreed with his call for self-defence, describing it as a dangerous path. He emphasised the need for continued efforts to strengthen the country’s security architecture and prevent further escalation of violence. Namadi also pointed to his administration’s success in resolving farmer-herder clashes in Jigawa State through dialogue and non-violent conflict resolution as a model for peace-building.

In contrast to the self-defence approach, Governor Namadi advocated for more collaboration between the government, traditional rulers, and local communities to resolve conflicts. He cited Jigawa’s progress in reducing violence, noting that the state is not facing the same insurgency and banditry challenges as other parts of Nigeria.
