Nigeria Records 17 Polio Variants in Eight States says NPHCDA

The National Primary Health Care Development Agency says 17 cases of circulating variant poliovirus type 2 have been recorded across 15 local government areas in eight states so far this year. Executive Director of the agency, Dr Muyi Aina, disclosed this in Abuja on Tuesday during its first quarter media briefing.

He said while Nigeria remains free of the Wild Polio Virus since 2020, the country continues to battle cVPV2, a mutated strain of the virus that has spread since 2021. Of the 17 cases, 12 were linked to Acute Flaccid Paralysis, while five were detected in environmental samples.

In response, the agency has introduced a strategic shift in its polio campaign, including improvements in vaccination team selection, accountability, and public mobilisation. Dr Aina added that utilisation of primary health care services has increased, with over 20 million patient visits recorded each quarter.

He also revealed that N22 billion from the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund has been disbursed to states this year through the agency’s gateway. The NPHCDA boss added that the agency commenced the training of frontline health workers in June 2024, and in less than a year, has retrained 60,470 frontline health workers across 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) out of the 120,000 targeted for training by the current administration.
