Court Strikes Out Naira Redesign Lawsuit Against Buhari, Emefiele

The Federal High Court in Abuja has struck out a N1 billion lawsuit filed against former President Muhammadu Buhari and former Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele over the controversial 2023 naira redesign policy.

The case, brought by lawyer Uthman Isa Tochukwu, alleged that the policy violated his fundamental rights, restricting his movement and access to bank funds during the early months of 2023.

Mr Tochukwu sought damages and a public apology from the defendants, as well as an injunction to prevent the government from withdrawing old currency notes.

However, at Monday’s hearing, Justice Inyang Ekwo dismissed the case, citing a lack of diligent prosecution. The court noted the plaintiff’s repeated failure to attend proceedings or provide legal representation, concluding that he had effectively abandoned the suit.

The naira redesign policy, introduced under Mr Buhari’s administration, sparked widespread hardship and cash shortages nationwide.
