The Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria, NPAN, has welcomed a tribunal ruling upholding a $220 million fine against Meta Platforms Inc., parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, for breaches of Nigerian data protection and competition laws.
The decision by the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal follows a 30-month probe by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, which uncovered unauthorised data sharing and discriminatory practices targeting Nigerian users between 2021 and 2023.

In a joint statement, NPAN President Mallam Kabiru Yusuf and General Secretary Mrs Angela Emuwa described the verdict as a watershed moment in Nigeria’s efforts to enforce digital responsibility and defend citizens’ rights online.
The association noted that Nigeria’s regulatory stance mirrors a global pushback against Big Tech over privacy and competition breaches, citing recent landmark penalties imposed on Meta, Amazon, Google and others across Europe for similar violations.
