Nurses Union Warns Against Quackery as Exodus Threatens Healthcare Standards

The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives has raised alarm over the growing menace of quackery in the profession, vowing to clamp down on illegal training centres and unauthorised practice in Lagos State.

Speaking at the Nurses Summit in Lagos, held to mark International Midwives Day and Nurses Week, State Chairperson Mrs. Christianah Adeboboye described the trend as a threat to public safety and the dignity of the nursing profession.

This year’s global themes—“Midwives: Critical in All Crises” and “Our Nurses, Our Future”—were used to highlight the vital role of nurses in healthcare systems worldwide.

Mrs. Adeboboye appealed to government and regulatory bodies to step up enforcement and provide greater support for qualified professionals.

She also raised concerns over the high attrition rate, revealing that over 15,000 nurses have left Nigeria in the last two years—many from Lagos—exacerbating already strained health services.
