Gbajabiamila Warns Budget Insertions Reflect Deep Disconnect in Nigeria’s Governance

President Tinubu’s Chief of Staff, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, has warned that persistent public misunderstanding of lawmakers’ roles is fuelling criticism over the use of budget insertions for constituency projects.

Speaking at the 2025 Open Week of the House of Representatives in Abuja, the former Speaker said Nigerians increasingly expect parliamentarians to deliver infrastructure and social services—functions legally assigned to the executive and local government.

Mr. Gbajabiamila said this mismatch between public expectations and constitutional mandates now poses a serious threat to the credibility of the legislature.

His comments come as BudgIT, a civic watchdog, revealed over 11,000 constituency projects worth nearly N7 trillion were inserted into the 2025 budget—describing the trend as systemic abuse.

But Gbajabiamila argued lawmakers resort to such measures to meet voter demands amid a failing local government structure.
