Lagos Assembly Moves to Streamline Marriage and Divorce Records

The Lagos State House of Assembly has advanced a new bill aimed at standardising the registration of marriages and dissolutions outside the federal Marriage Act.

During Thursday’s plenary, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa said the proposal seeks to protect the rights of spouses and children, and improve legal clarity around customary unions. The bill has been sent to the House Committee on Judiciary for further scrutiny.

Committee Chair Oladipo Ajomale said the legislation would simplify legal processes, support foreign missions in marital verification, and unify records across Lagos’ five IBILE divisions.

Lawmakers described the bill as timely, with calls for clearer rights for both partners, penalties for interference in marriage proceedings, and better child welfare protections.

There were also proposals for legal recognition of distance and cross-border marriages, as well as compulsory court-sanctioned dissolutions.
