Nigeria Deports Chinese Fugitive Wanted for Multi-Million Yuan Tax Fraud

The Nigeria Police Force has arrested and deported a Chinese national, Chen Gaochong, wanted for tax fraud involving nearly five million Chinese Yuan.

Chen was apprehended in Lagos on 24 June during a covert operation led by INTERPOL’s National Central Bureau in Abuja, working in conjunction with Chinese authorities. He was handed over to officials from the People’s Republic of China on 3 July.

Chinese prosecutors allege Chen fraudulently issued 45 fake VAT invoices in 2017 using two company identities. After fleeing China in 2019, he travelled through Hong Kong and Burkina Faso before illegally entering Nigeria in 2021.

Police say he deliberately avoided renewing his passport to evade detection.

The operation, described as a major success in international law enforcement cooperation, reinforces Nigeria’s pledge not to provide refuge for fugitives.
