Cameroon’s Biya to Contest for Eighth Term in Office

Cameroon’s President Paul Biya, aged 92 and the world’s oldest serving head of state, has announced he will seek re-election in October. In a message posted on social media, he said his decision followed widespread calls from citizens at home and in the diaspora.

Biya, who has ruled since 1982, said his determination to lead remains strong despite growing national challenges. His confirmation ends months of speculation, following long public absences and health concerns.

His re-election bid comes amid rising criticism over corruption, insecurity and poor governance, as well as recent political fallout with key northern allies. Two former close associates have now joined the race, alongside several opposition figures including Maurice Kamto and Joshua Osih.

Despite calls for fresh leadership, Biya remains the ruling party’s de-facto candidate and has never lost an election. If re-elected, he would serve until nearly age 100, further extending his four-decade grip on power in the central African nation.
