Nigerian Army Dismantles Illegal Refineries, Arrests Dozens in Renewed Niger Delta Crackdown

Troops of the 6 Division, Nigerian Army, have intensified their clampdown on oil theft in the Niger Delta, dismantling dozens of illegal refining sites and arresting over 50 suspects during operations conducted between 30 June and 13 July 2025.

The crackdown, which focused heavily on Rivers, Delta, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom States, led to the seizure of more than 25,000 litres of stolen petroleum products, including crude oil, diesel, and kerosene. Troops uncovered illegal connection points, destroyed makeshift refining equipment, and intercepted boats ferrying stolen fuel.

In Rivers and Abia States, key illegal hubs around the Imo River and Ukwa West were dismantled. Arrests were also made in Delta and Bayelsa, where surveillance efforts intensified.

Army authorities say the operations reflect an ongoing commitment to protecting national oil assets and restoring order in the region.
