NCDC Confirms Dengue Fever Outbreak in Edo

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed an outbreak of dengue fever in Edo State. The agency said the cases were detected between 9 and 13 June through laboratory testing, raising fresh concerns over the growing threat of vector-borne diseases across the country.

NCDC also warned of a possible wider outbreak of cholera and yellow fever, saying Nigeria is already seeing a sharp rise in cholera infections while yellow and dengue fevers are beginning to emerge in some states. The warning follows recent weather forecasts by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, which listed Sokoto, Kaduna, Zamfara, and Yobe among states at increased risk of flash flooding this month.

As of the last week of June, suspected cholera cases had been reported in 34 states, with Zamfara alone accounting for 32 percent. Other states with high case numbers include Bayelsa, Adamawa, Delta, Lagos, and Rivers. The NCDC also confirmed seven cases of yellow fever in Abia, Anambra, Edo, Ekiti, Lagos, and Rivers States.

The agency said it is coordinating a national response, working with state governments, health partners, and communities to boost surveillance, provide supplies, and deploy rapid response teams. It advised the public to practise good hygiene, avoid stagnant water, use insecticide-treated nets, and ensure all vaccinations are up to date.
