Plateau Government Faults Military Over Killing of 27 Farmers

The Plateau State Government has criticised the Nigerian Army over its failure to arrest or neutralise those responsible for the killing of 27 farmers in Tahoss community, Riyom Local Government Area, on Monday. The Commissioner for Information, Joyce Ramnap, said the attack happened just 200 metres from a military checkpoint, yet no suspect was apprehended.

Speaking in a monitored interview, Ramnap said the community was easily accessible, dismissing claims that it was too remote for timely military intervention. She described the killings as unprovoked and despicable, adding that the attackers not only killed residents but also destroyed crops on farmlands.

The commissioner reiterated Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s stance that the continuous bloodshed in the state amounts to genocide. She acknowledged the efforts of some committed soldiers but admitted that “bad eggs” within the ranks remain a concern.

Monday’s attack is the latest in a string of deadly assaults in Plateau State. In April, over 100 people were killed in Bokkos and Bassa LGAs, while similar attacks claimed about 150 lives on Christmas Eve in 2023, drawing both national and international condemnation.
