Federal Environment Ministry issues Flood Alert for 11 States

The Federal Ministry of Environment has issued a warning of imminent flooding in eleven states between 16 and 20 July. The alert was issued by Usman Bokani, Director of the National Flood Early Warning Centre.

Areas at risk include parts of Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Borno, Bauchi, Cross River, Jigawa, Katsina, Kano, Plateau, Yobe and Zamfara States. Residents in towns such as Mubi, Maiduguri, Jos, Eket, Gusau and Dutse are advised to be on high alert.

Bokani urged state governments and relevant stakeholders to take proactive measures to safeguard lives and property, warning that the consequences of inaction could be severe.

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency had earlier identified 30 states and the Federal Capital Territory as high-risk flood zones in 2025. In 2024, floods claimed 321 lives and displaced over 740,000 people nationwide.
