Edo Government Accuses Peter Obi of Disregarding Protocol During State Visit

The Edo State Government has accused Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, of breaching security protocol during his recent visit to the state.

Commissioner for Information and Communication, Paul Ohonbamu, argued that Obi should have notified state authorities ahead of his visit for proper security arrangements. According to him, the former governor’s public gestures, including a ₦15 million donation to a nursing school, were a distraction from what he described as “hypocrisy embedded in deceit.”

Ohonbamu also claimed Obi’s visit led to a stampede that resulted in at least two deaths and several injuries, citing intelligence reports. He added that Obi’s actions were hypocritical, recalling a 2013 incident where Obi allegedly detained former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, for 48 hours in Anambra State.

In response, Labour Party’s Nana Kazaure said the state governor’s comments amounted to a violation of Obi’s constitutional rights and a threat to his life. Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has called on the Edo governor to apologise, while Labour Party senators described the governor’s remarks as executive rascality.

Governor Monday Okpebholo has since denied issuing any threat, saying his comments were misinterpreted.
