House Indicts 31 MDAs Over Missing Billions

The House of Representatives has indicted 31 Ministries, Departments and Agencies for financial irregularities totalling over 103 billion naira and 950,000 dollars.

The House also called on anti-graft agencies, including the EFCC and ICPC, to recover the funds and ensure they are remitted to the federal treasury. The move follows a motion by Rep. Bamidele Salam, based on findings from the Public Accounts Committee’s review of Auditor-General reports for 2019 and 2020.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Bank of Agriculture, and the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Plc were among the institutions cited for unauthorised spending, unremitted revenues, and procurement violations. In one instance, the Mint was found to have paid over 14 billion naira in unapproved salaries and allowances.

Other agencies, including the Rural Electrification Agency, Veterinary Council, and the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, were also directed to refund misused funds, with disciplinary actions recommended for erring officials. The House further urged the Secretary to the Government of the Federation to issue a circular allowing agency heads to appoint external auditors in the absence of governing boards.
