EU Pledges €1.5 Million in Aid for Displaced Persons in Benue

The European Union has allocated €1.5 million to support internally displaced persons in Benue State, including victims of the Yelewata attack. The aid package, announced on Thursday, will be implemented in partnership with the International Organization for Migration over a six-month period.

The EU says the funding will provide protection, shelter, water, sanitation and hygiene services, as well as multi-purpose cash assistance. According to the bloc, more than 1.5 million people have been displaced in Benue since 2018, with the violence intensifying in recent years.

Between 2024 and 2025 alone, an estimated 6,900 lives have been lost and over 400,000 people displaced. The June 13 attack on Yelewata, which killed and displaced many, is part of a broader pattern of armed violence that continues to fuel a protracted humanitarian crisis in the region.

Conditions in displacement camps remain dire, with inadequate shelter, poor access to clean water, and rising protection risks—especially for women, children and people with disabilities. The EU says the situation demands urgent and sustained humanitarian intervention, hence their commitment.
