Google has announced a $37 million investment to strengthen artificial intelligence research, innovation, and skills development across Africa, with Nigeria among the key beneficiaries.
The package includes $7 million for AI curriculum development, training, and online safety programmes in Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, and South Africa. In Ghana, a new AI community centre will open in Accra, alongside 100,000 fully funded tech scholarships covering AI essentials, data analytics, and cybersecurity.

A major component is a $25 million commitment to improve food security through AI tools supporting hunger forecasting and agricultural resilience.
In addition, Google will fund over 100 AI-focused startups with a mix of grants, technical aid, and mentorship across sectors such as health, education, and agriculture.
Research institutes in South Africa will also receive $2 million in grants to expand postgraduate AI research.
Google says the move underscores its long-term commitment to Africa’s digital future.
