EU Denies Cutting Humanitarian Aid to Nigeria Amid Nutrition Crisis

The European Union has dismissed claims that it has scaled back humanitarian assistance to Nigeria, particularly in response to worsening food and nutrition insecurity.

The denial follows a statement by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) on 25 July, which suggested that the EU and other donors had made significant funding cuts. However, the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS described the claims as inaccurate and stressed that humanitarian support through its Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Office, ECHO, remains consistent with 2024 levels.

The bloc confirmed efforts to increase funding through top-ups and noted that MSF had since revised its release, removing references to the EU.

While praising MSF’s fieldwork, some of which it funds, the EU called for accuracy in public messaging. It also reaffirmed its commitment to Nigeria and urged broader support for vulnerable communities facing emergency conditions.
