Nigerian Governors Engage in Lavish Spending Despite Economic Hardship says Africa Report

The United States embassy in Nigeria has drawn attention to a report highlighting the extravagant spending by state governors on government houses, despite the country’s ongoing economic crisis. The report, titled ‘Nigeria’s ruling class splashes billions on government houses’, was published by ‘The Africa Report’ and shared by the US embassy on social media.

The report said while President Bola Tinubu has urged Nigerians to endure hardship resulting from his economic reforms, state governors are not making similar sacrifices. It cited Oyo State, where Governor Seyi Makinde approved N63.4 billion to renovate the Government House, and Gombe State, where Governor Inuwa Yahaya is spending nearly N30 billion on a new residence and assembly complex.

The embassy, quoting transparency and accountability advocates, said such fiscal conduct reflects a lack of responsibility and deepens inequality.

The revelations have sparked renewed public criticism of the country’s political elite, with calls for more prudent spending and better alignment between government actions and the economic realities faced by ordinary Nigerians.
