Government Withdraws Controversial Nurses’ Pay Circular Amid Strike Fears

The Federal Government has withdrawn a contentious circular affecting nurses’ pay, following nationwide outcry and threats of industrial action from health sector unions.

Health Minister Dr. Ali Pate made the announcement after Thursday’s Federal Executive Council meeting, chaired by President Bola Tinubu. He said the decision reflects the government’s commitment to industrial harmony and uninterrupted healthcare delivery.

The circular, issued by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, had sparked anger among nurses over its potential impact on salary structures and entitlements.

Dr Pate confirmed that formal talks are now underway with unions, including the Nigerian Medical Association and nursing groups, to resolve wage and welfare issues. He added that deadlines for negotiations had been extended and arrears disbursements are being processed.

He also addressed nurses’ concerns over centralised recruitment, promising a fairer system as part of wider health sector reforms.
