The National Economic Council (NEC) has called for the strengthening of State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs) across Nigeria to boost preparedness for the 2025 flood season. It also directed the Federal Ministry of Finance to release emergency funds to all states, the FCT, and select federal agencies to mitigate the effects of possible flooding.
This follows a presentation by the Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Zubaida Umar, detailing Nigeria’s flood preparedness efforts and highlighting challenges such as weak drainage systems, poor urban planning compliance, and inactive local emergency structures.

According to a statement from the Vice President’s office, the council urged local governments and communities to take ownership of flood risk management by engaging in public awareness campaigns and promptly reporting early signs of flood threats.
NEMA disclosed that emergency coordination centres have been activated nationwide, with high-risk states receiving rescue equipment. However, it warned that delayed data reporting, insecurity, and poor sanitation practices could hinder effective response.
