The Federal Executive Council has approved infrastructure projects worth over N900 billion to upgrade major airports across Nigeria. Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo said the centrepiece is the complete rehabilitation and modernisation of Terminal One at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, at a cost of N712.26 billion. The works, to be delivered by CCECC in 22 months, will involve a full mechanical and electrical systems overhaul, expansion of Terminal Two, and the construction of a new apron and access roads.
In addition, the council approved runway and taxiway rehabilitation projects for Malam Aminu Kano and Port Harcourt international airports. Kano’s upgrade, valued at N46.39 billion, includes improved airfield lighting to category 2 standard, with delivery expected in 24 weeks. The Port Harcourt project will cost N42.14 billion and aims to enhance flight safety during adverse weather.

According to the Minister, N49.89 billion contract will see the installation of a 14.6 kilometre perimeter fence, CCTV, solar floodlights, and an advanced intrusion detection system to prevent runway incursions. The apron area at the Lagos domestic terminal will also be expanded under a N24.27 billion project to improve aircraft parking and traffic flow.
The FEC also approved a full business case for a 30-year concession of Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu. Minister Keyamo said the move, which includes the cargo terminal, is part of plans to make loss-making airports profitable by involving private investors.
