National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives Calls Off Strike

The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives has called off its nationwide warning strike, following a closed-door meeting with the Federal Government. Health Minister Ali Pate announced the decision on Friday in Abuja.

The industrial action, which began on 29 July, was prompted by unmet demands around improved welfare, allowances, and working conditions in federal health institutions. The union had earlier issued a 15-day ultimatum on 14 July, citing the government’s lack of engagement.

Although union leaders declined to speak after the meeting, the Minister confirmed that agreements were reached with the association’s leadership. The strike, which affected public health services nationwide, was initially scheduled to run until 5 August.

The nurses had called for an upward review of shift and uniform allowances, the introduction of a dedicated salary structure, increased core duty allowance, mass recruitment, and the creation of a nursing department within the Health Ministry.
