Kingmakers Endorse Rashidi Ladoja as Next Olubadan of Ibadanland

Ibadan’s traditional council has unanimously endorsed former Oyo State governor, Rashidi Ladoja, as the next Olubadan, following the death of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin on 7 July.

The Olubadan-In-Council, meeting at the new palace in Oke Aremo, confirmed Ladoja—currently the Otun Olubadan and highest-ranking chief in the civil line—as the 44th monarch under the city’s unique rotational system.

Balogun of Ibadanland, Tajudeen Ajibola, said the council’s decision would be formally transmitted to Governor Seyi Makinde for approval.

Mr. Ladoja, 80, is expected to bring political experience and a strong community bond to the throne.

Born in Gambari near Ibadan, the engineer-turned-politician served as governor between 2003 and 2007.

His ascension follows his acceptance of the beaded crown in 2024—a prerequisite under the reformed chieftaincy structure. A formal installation ceremony is expected in the coming weeks.
