The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has reiterated that multiple voter registrations remain a criminal offence under Nigerian law, attracting fines, imprisonment, or both, as stipulated in Section 114(b) of the Electoral Act 2022.
Speaking in Yenagoa at the resumption of the Continuous Voter Registration, Bayelsa State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mallam Isah Shaka Ehimeakhe, expressed concern over repeated cases of double registration.

He explained that INEC’s Automated Biometric Identification System, ABIS, is designed to detect such cases and ensure offenders are flagged.
Mallam Ehimeakhe stressed that individuals who already possess a Permanent Voter Card, PVC, do not need to register again, and doing so constitutes an offence.
He encouraged eligible Nigerians, especially those turning 18, to register, assuring that the commission will ensure a transparent, secure process in partnership with security agencies and civil society groups.
