Lagos Government Urges Residents in Flood-Prone Areas to Relocate

The Lagos State Government has issued a warning to residents in parts of Lekki, Ikorodu and Ajegunle to relocate from low-lying areas to higher ground as the state braces for flash flooding. Environment Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab said the advisory followed weather predictions by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, which forecasts higher rainfall levels than last year.

Speaking on a TV interview, Mr Wahab identified specific areas including Ajilete in Ajegunle, Majidu in Ikorodu, and parts of the Lekki corridor as vulnerable. He advised residents of Isheri in the OPIC axis to also remain alert. The commissioner, however, assured that locations such as Epe, Mushin and Ikeja are expected to remain safe.

Several communities in Lagos were submerged on Monday following continuous rainfall that began the night before. Viral videos showed homes and vehicles underwater, with economic activities brought to a halt in parts of the state as residents struggled through flooded roads and clogged drainage systems.

Despite the threat, Mr Wahab appealed for calm, saying the state government is clearing drainage channels and expanding flood paths to reduce impact. While urging Lagosians to act responsibly, he noted that though climate change cannot be stopped, its effects can be mitigated.
