The Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, has assured Nigerians that genetically modified foods are safe but must be properly labelled for consumers. Speaking in an interview, she emphasised the importance of transparency and collaboration in regulating GMO products.
Adeyeye said NAFDAC works closely with the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) to ensure the safety and quality of GMO foods before they are approved for sale in Nigeria. She explained that no GMO product is cleared by NAFDAC without NBMA’s certification and review.

Highlighting the need for consumer awareness, she advised Nigerians to read product labels carefully and look out for indications that a food item is genetically modified. She added that foods must be labelled correctly to help people make informed choices, including between organic and non-organic products.
The NAFDAC chief noted that while the agency monitors and certifies food safety at the federal level, state authorities also have a role to play in ensuring safe consumption.
