State Creation Not Possible For Now says Senate

Senate Pushes for Social Media Giants to Set Up Offices in Nigeria Under New Law

The Nigerian Senate says it cannot recommend the creation of any new state at the moment. Senate spokesman Yemi Adaramodu told reporters in Ilawe Ekiti that the process requires a constitutional review involving input from Nigerians and other stakeholders.

Adaramodu confirmed that 61 proposals for state creation have been submitted from across the six geopolitical zones. He explained that the Senate does not have the constitutional power to create states on its own and must work alongside the House of Representatives during the review process.

While explaining the process, Mr. Adaramodu said the proposals will be assessed by the constitutional review committee chaired by Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau. The committee will then collate, evaluate and filter the requests before presenting a report to the National Assembly.

According to him, a public hearing will then be held to allow supporters and opponents of each proposal to make their case. Adaramodu stressed that state creation is a serious matter requiring detailed demographic, geographic and historical data, and that no state has been recommended for creation yet.
