Flood Disaster Kills Eight People, Destroys Property in Ebonyi State

Eight people have died in severe flooding that struck Kpoghirikpo, in the Itim community of Afikpo Local Government Area, Ebonyi State. The disaster followed heavy rainfall and left more than 3,000 households displaced, while over 800 farmlands were destroyed.

Ebonyi State Commissioner for Human Capital Development, Ann Aligwe, said an emergency response team from the State Emergency Management Agency has been sent to the community for immediate intervention and rescue. She added that the state government has provided relief materials to support those affected.

The Commissioner urged residents in low-lying, flood-prone areas to move to safer locations prepared by the government as the rainy season continues. She warned that further flooding is possible if heavy rains persist.

Authorities say the displacement crisis is one of the worst in the area in recent years, and that efforts are ongoing to restore essential services and shelter to affected communities.
