President Tinubu Reconstitutes HYPREP Governing Council, Board of Trustees

President Bola Tinubu has approved the reconstitution of the Governing Council and Board of Trustees of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project. A statement from his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, will chair the new governing council. Members include Loanyie Barituka Victor, representing environmental NGOs, and Bright Onyebuchi Jacob and Henry Obiabure for Niger Delta communities among others.

The President also appointed four alternates, including Dr Abraham Olungwe and Maeba Ekpobari for Ogoniland, and Joseph Akedesuo and Beauty Warejuowei for the Niger Delta.

The changes follow a January meeting between President Tinubu and stakeholders from Rivers State, including suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and Ogoni leaders, to address issues around the Niger Delta cleanup project and political tensions in the state.

International partners have also pledged support for HYPREP, with the Belgian government reaffirming its commitment to the Ogoni cleanup, while the United Nations said it would provide technical assistance for mangrove restoration, climate change mitigation, food security, clean water access and public health, aligning with its environmental protection and peacebuilding goals.
