Nigerian Afropop singer Tems says women are not respected in the music industry and often face barriers to success. While speaking in an interview, the two-time Grammy Award winner said she struggled to be taken seriously at the start of her career, adding that there was “always a price to pay” and limited opportunities for women.

Aimed at empowering women, Tems has launched The Leading Vibe Initiative to provide opportunities for young women in Africa’s music industry. The programme began on Friday in her hometown, Lagos, with workshops, masterclasses and panel discussions for vocalists, songwriters and producers.
The 28-year-old, known for hits including ‘Love Me Jeje’ and ‘Free Mind’, has previously spoken out about body shaming after online criticism earlier this year. She urged young women entering the industry to define their boundaries and be clear about their brand.
