FG raises $980m for CNG rollout in 18 months

The federal government says at least $980 million has been raised to finance the construction of Compressed Natural Gas centres across the country in the past 18 months. Programme Director of the Presidential CNG Initiative, Michael Oluwagbemi, disclosed this at the launch of a NASENI-Portland CNG station and training centre in Abuja.

He said the number of conversion centres has grown from seven to 350, while vehicles converted to CNG have increased from about 4,000 to 100,000. Oluwagbemi noted that private sector players, including BUA and the Nigerian Bottling Company, have invested over ₦720 billion in CNG trucks and daughter stations.

The initiative has expanded CNG capacity from five to 20 states, with plans to reach at least 30 states and the FCT by year-end. Incentives such as discounted conversion kits for transport unions have been introduced to encourage adoption.

Portland Gas CEO Folajimi Mohammed said the partnership with NASENI aims to promote cleaner energy and reduce transport costs. He described the facility as a statement of Nigeria’s readiness to lead in clean energy innovation.
