A fire has destroyed at least 22 shops at Kara Market in Ajase-Ipo, Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State. The incident happened in the early hours of Wednesday after a cooking fire allegedly reignited and spread through the market.
The Head of Media and Publicity of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, confirmed the incident, saying firefighters were able to stop the blaze before it reached the section where animals were kept.

He explained that out of 323 shops in the market, the fire destroyed 22 plank shops and six container shops. Goods lost included foodstuffs such as rice, yam flour, corn and millet, along with provisions and daily-use items.
Adekunle added that firefighters battled through the night to prevent further damage. He quoted the Fire Service Director as commending the swift response of officers and urged traders to adopt strict fire safety measures.
