President Bola Tinubu has abolished the five percent excise duty on telecommunications services in Nigeria. The levy, which applied to mobile voice and data services, had faced widespread criticism from industry stakeholders and consumer groups.
The Executive Vice-Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Aminu Maida, confirmed the removal during a briefing in Abuja. He said the duty, initially suspended in 2023, has now been permanently scrapped under new national tax laws.

The tax was first introduced to boost government revenue but was suspended by President Tinubu shortly after he assumed office. Lawmakers later proposed reinstating it in 2024 as part of broader revenue measures, a move strongly opposed by telecom operators.
The Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria had warned that reinstating the levy would raise digital access costs and threaten the growth of the sector.
