The Academic Staff Union of Universities has warned of a fresh nationwide strike, accusing the Federal Government of failing to honour the 2009 ASUU–FGN agreement. The union said lecturers have endured over two years of broken promises on funding and revitalisation of public universities.
ASUU President, Christopher Piwuna, speaking at a press conference in Jos, listed unresolved issues including salary arrears, withheld promotions, and the welfare of retired lecturers. He said several appeals to the government had been ignored.

Piwuna rejected the government’s proposed loan scheme for tertiary institution staff, insisting lecturers need implementation of existing agreements, not credit facilities. He also criticised the proliferation of poorly funded universities, warning that it has lowered standards and global rankings.
The union said it would await the outcome of a government meeting scheduled for 28 August before deciding on strike action.
